What are the common retainer problems and how to fix them?
Wearing your retainer for hours during the day or overnight leaves behind invisible residue from saliva, food, and drink. This residue builds up gradually over time, often going unnoticed until your retainer turns cloudy, feels rough, or starts to smell stale.
Here are the three most common retainer problems, what causes them and the most efficient way to fix them.
1. Cloudy film and white, crusty build-up
Why it happens: a thin, sticky biofilm forms on anything you wear all day. Minerals from your saliva and tap water settle into it and dry onto the plastic, first as a cloudy film, then as chalky white deposits in the grooves and along the edges.
The fix: clean it properly every day so nothing has time to set. A quick rinse isn't enough on its own. Avoid using a toothbrush and toothpaste, which can leave fine scratches in your retainers’ plastic, and keep your retainer away from hot water, which can warp it.
With Zima: the Dental Pod is lab-tested on real retainers to remove dental biofilm¹. The device’s ultrasonic cavitational power creates tiny bubbles that expand and collapse in the water, breaking down biofilm and loosening build-up. This action works to remove deposits and discolouration from your oral appliance.
2. A stale smell
Why it happens: residue from saliva, food and drink left on the plastic. Storing a damp retainer in a basic plastic protective case, or wearing it while you eat and drink, makes it worse.
The fix: clean it as soon as it comes out and let it air-dry.
With Zima: a daily clean in the Dental Pod leaves your appliance fresh and clean. 96.7% of users agree the Dental Pod removes unpleasant tastes and smells, and 97.2% of users agree their oral appliance feels consistently fresh after cleaning in the Dental Pod². For everyday storage, the Zima UV Case uses integrated UV light technology to keep your dry retainer protected wherever you take it.
3. Yellowing and stains
Why it happens: clear plastic shows everything. Tea, coffee and smoking leave pigments that build into a yellow or brown tint.
The fix: take your retainer out before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. It is also recommended to rinse it straight afterwards so pigments don't settle.
With Zima: Our advanced ultrasonic technology is your go-to! In laboratory testing, a single 5-minute cycle in the Dental Pod completely removed visible coffee stains from clear retainer material³, with the Ultrasonic Boosting Tablets making stain removal markedly more consistent from cycle to cycle.⁴ Real-world users experience the same great results: 93.6% of survey participants agreed that the Dental Pod effectively removes food, drink, and cosmetic stains from their oral appliances.²
Retainer care has never been easier! Combining Zima's high-frequency ultrasonic Pods, effervescent boosting tablets, and sleek UV cleaning aluminum storage cases gives you the complete routine to keep your appliance fresh, clear, and fully protected every day.
